Making the Case for Women in Nigeria: A Synopsis of Women's Representation in Appointive And Elective Positions in Nigeria
In Nigeria, access to political, economic and
social leadership positions is difficult because
the society thinks leadership belongs to men.
Women's representation in elective and appointive
positions continues to be disheartening despite
the various declarations by international bodies
like WHO, UN and World Bank. These bodies have
continued to warn that it is mainly by narrowing
gender-inequality gaps in the socio-economy and
general polity can a society develop to its full
potentials.
This publication - the first of the 'Making the case
series’ attempts to examine the trends of women
in governance, , in consonance with trends in all
aspect of the socio-economy in order to determine
how these variables influence each other. The
influences of variables such as; educational
attainment, health/w ell-being, economic
participation/opportunities, interpersonal
relationships between women, corruption and
culture were used to explore the issues of a
traditionally disproportionate gender bias in the
political empowerment model of Nigeria.
