As in the rest of southern Africa, physical mobility was a crucial issue in the relationship between the colonial rulers and the ruled in colonial Zimbabwe (or southern Rhodesia, as it was named by British settlers). Denying certain groups of people access to certain spaces was a cornerstone of policy. Thus some places could be ideologized as "white," as spaces that African people could enter only temporarily and at certain times. Within these spaces, African people were lured or herded, supervised and regulated, depend- ing on the labor needs of the economy
