Yvonne Njoka is the shelter manager at a Maisha Girls Shelter, a safety home run with support of the Center for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW) in Nairobi, Kenya. CREAW offers shelter to girls under 19 who have experienced defilement, abuse and other forms of gender based violence. There are currently 24 teen girls living there, some of whom are young mothers. There are 8 babies staying there with their teen mothers. CREAW offers temporary accomodation to girls and their children, in cases of teen pregnancy. A girl stays at the shelter until there is stabiity at home or a legal case has been decided by the courts. CREAW also offers pro bono counselling and legal services as well as family home visits to check on girls who leave the shelter or those who don't take up accomodation at the Nairobi shelter. The African Women's Development Fund (AWDF) has provided different forms of support to CREAW to make projects such as this possible.
