Monitoring and Investigating Human rights abuses in armed conflict
Widespread abuses of human rights and international humanitarian law are a common feature of modern conflicts. Civilians, particularly women and children, are the main victims in these wars. Several armed groups terrorize the civilian population to weaken support for their opponents. In some cases government forces attack unarmed civilians because of their ethnic origin or political affiliation. In other situations the state is weak and no longer holds legal authority to protect the weak. In conflicts like these human rights are virtually never respected, despite being protected by international law.
