Seeking the protection of LGBTI1 rights at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights
Over the past four years there has been a steadily growing movement of
organising for the protection of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and
intersex (LGBTI) rights at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’
Rights (‘ACmHPR’).3 The ACmHPR is seen as the ideal venue for the protection
of rights of sexual minorities because of its mandate to protect human
rights. The organising has focused on identifying activists who are interested
in working in the regional human rights mechanism, expanding the circles
of activism by reaching out to mainstream human rights organisations and
finding ways of getting the ACmHPR to understand and respond to the
violations of human rights of LGBTI people.
