This article examines the idea of “a better life for all” promised to South Africans in the early post-apartheid era and reveals how deeply troubled it is by sexual politics, gendered power and cultural hegemonies. The article investigates a response to a question about oral sex put to Zuma as the then deputy-president of South Africa during a debate in the national parliament of South Africa.
