Conceptualizing Gender: The Eurocentric Foundations of Feminist Concepts and the Challenge of African Epistemologies
In this paper, my objective is to interrogate gender and allied concepts based on African cultural experiences and
epistemologies. The focus here is on the nuclear family system, which is a specifically European form and yet is
the original source of many of the concepts that are used universally in gender research. The goal is to find ways in
which African research can be better informed by local concerns and interpretations and at the same time,
concurrently, for African experiences to be taken into account in general theory-building, the structural racism of the
global system notwithstanding.
