  • The impact of sociocultural factors on women smallholder farmers : Middle East and North Africa

This chapter assesses the often unrecognized and undervalued contribution made by women to (primarily smallholder) farming in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. It reviews the range of challenges they face in securing a fair, safe and rewarding livelihood from agriculture. The chapter also assesses a broad range of potential solutions to address these challenges.

Description
Chapter taken from: Sachs, C. and Castellanos, P. (ed.), Women and smallholder farming: Addressing global inequities in agriculture, Burleigh Dodds Science Publishing, Cambridge, UK, 2024, (ISBN: 978 1 80146 805 3; (www.bdspublishing.com) Dr. Najjar’s chapter, “The Impact of Sociocultural Factors on Women Smallholder Farmers: Middle East and North Africa,” examines how deeply rooted gender norms shape women’s daily lives and limit their economic opportunities. Drawing on decades of ICARDA’s gender research, it offers a detailed look at how social norms, legal frameworks, and climate pressures intersect to make women’s agricultural work in this region essential, but unfortunately, invisible.
