Listening to Ourselves: Landscapes and Futures of African Women’s Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing
This article interrogates mental health meanings, experiences, and challenges faced by African women. It discloses an intricate picture of mental health in Africa through the perspectives of African women interviewed across contexts and stakes. The analysis uses a study of vernaculars (common words, phrases, and ideas) and a thematic review to show what African women mean, experience, and ask for, when we say mental health and emotional wellbeing. This article finds that mental health meanings for African women are held within vernaculars of functionality and access. Moreover, that African women need de-stigmatisation of mental health, increased livelihood options and improved access and quality of mental health care resources to thrive.
